Small and intermediate technology can make huge differences in the lives of the poor. The use of technologies could promote productivity, ensure food and nutrition security and enhance the growth and socio-economic condition of people. Such appropriate and cost-effective technology in Nepal is poly house and drip irrigation.
Poly house technology is the system of growing vegetables by protecting the crops from extreme rain. Growing a vegetable garden in a poly tunnel extends vegetable growing season. A poly tunnel enables the farmers to grow off seasonal vegetables and provide weather protection, a sheltered place for nurturing seedlings. A poly tunnel can expand the scope of food growing. This technology protects the plants from further damage and loss from extreme weather conditions. This technology helps in enhancing production and productivity and eventually helps in enhancing the economic condition of people.
Likewise, drip irrigation is very simple and effective from the point of view of both technical skill and cost. A properly installed drip irrigation technology prevents water loss through overflow, deep filtration and evaporation. Supplements of agriculture nutrients can be applied efficiently together with water through drip irrigation. Drip irrigation allows the delivery of water and nutrients to the roots of plants through a network of pipes. It saves time and no water is wasted. Drip irrigation waters the roots of the plants directly; therefore, farmers do not need to spread water all over resulting in wastage through evaporation. It can be applied even in the odd-shaped land and uneven topography.
With an objective to enhance production and income level of IDPs and earthquake victims, Prangarik Pathshala (school of agriculture) was commissioned by Cordiad caritas Nepal to execute the project titled “Plastic Tunnel House Construction &Drip Irrigation Installment and tomato farming training”.



Chief Objective:

To main objective of the project is to help the Internally Displaced People and earthquake victims to enhance vegetable production especially tomatoes and enhance their income through technology based vegetable production.


  • To construct poly house for IDPs
  • To provide training of tomato farming to the IDPs with the concept of ‘learning by doing’
  • To install drip irrigation system
  • To transplant seedlings from nursery to farm-land
  • To provide consulting and technical services for business plan development and marketing knowledge to IDPs and group leaders
  • To provide consulting services and training on land management, waster and fertilizer management with staking, training, pruning and plant protection
  • To repair already constructed plastic tunnels
  • To provide technical backstopping with other input support
  • To train and support the IDPs and farmers for marketing, market linkage and market system development
  • To provide agro-based micro-enterprise development training and facilitate them to develop micro enterprise


  • Plastic tunnels constructed on 7.5 ropani among 8 ropani of land
  • 120 IDPs trained on high-tech tomato production and commercial tomatoes farming
  • 120 IDPs trained on 6000 seedlings preparation at coco-mix
  • Nursery management done and seedlings planted on nurseries
  • Seedlings from nursery to farm-land transplanted
  • IDPs and group leaders developed technical knowledge and skills on business plan development and marketing
  • The beneficiaries, staffs and group leaders were trained about technique of seedling preparation at coco-mix; land management, waster and fertilizer management with staking, training, pruning and plant protection.
  • Already constructed plastic tunnels repaired and technical backstopping provided with other input support
  • IDPs trained and supported for agro based micro-enterprise development
